ChatGPT Work

Also known as: ChatGPT Work app, ChatGPT desktop agent

Definition

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agentic desktop experience, built into a unified ChatGPT app for Mac and Windows, that can operate your computer, a built-in browser, and connected work apps to deliver finished work like spreadsheets, slide decks, and documents, rather than only chatting.

ChatGPT Work turns ChatGPT from a chat assistant into a digital colleague that acts on real work. Powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model, it reasons through multi-step tasks, works across your local files and live websites, and produces actual artifacts. It ships inside a rebuilt ChatGPT desktop app that also folds in Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, so business and engineering work share one tool.

It connects to the tools teams already use, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, and project trackers. That connector layer is what moves it from a clever demo to something that touches a real workflow, the same role MCP plays for Claude Cowork.

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's direct answer to agentic desktop AI and is closely comparable to Anthropic's Claude Cowork. Both operate your computer with a human in the loop for sensitive actions. The right choice usually comes down to your existing ecosystem rather than a large capability gap.
